Updates!
  • 2024-04-12:
    (1) Added a French translation. Merci beaucoup, Nostural !
    (2) The "Free Trial Ongoing!" as well as the "Hours/Days Remaining" options on the Plumbflix Player are now unclickable. They do not contain a Sim interaction so it made no sense to have it be clickable.
  • 2024-03-15:
    (1) Fixed the remote control animations looking so weird when renewing a subscription. It's been bugging me for the longest time.
    (2) Added a new feature that ties in with the update to my Scissors Clippers mod, allowing Sims to get free Movie Night passes if they possess a Plumbflix coupon.
    (3) Added a Hungarian translation. Nagyon szépen köszönöm, kaligi!

This lime-coloured Yoshi is back with another mod, trying to enhance another aspect of gameplay that came quite short in his opinion.

The FreeTime expansion pack introduced a handful of Movies-On-Demand available from any TV set, but Maxis did not think beyond simply making it an interaction available on TV sets. Sims are seemingly obsessed with those movies, to the point where they will flock to the TV to watch a movie and you can't even interact with them anymore.

Also, while Smart TVs with pre-installed streaming apps do certainly exist nowadays, none such exist in an unmodded Sims 2 game, so I did not feel that readily available movies-on-demand were realistic.
However, back in the Sims 2 era, Netflix was just starting to explore streaming films over the Internet, and if TVs did not have Netflix included, other Internet-capable devices would have to do this job. DVD players and recorders, but also game consoles such as the Wii or Xbox 360 had Netflix apps available.

And now... your Sims can enjoy the SimNation equivalent, Plumbflix, on their own Internet-capable device!

So what does the mod change?
  • Plumbflix is the default replacement for the movies-on-demand system from FreeTime.
  • Without the Blu-ray player "Simsong BD-1080P8" (included in the mod and, in fact, its main focus), movies are not available on TV sets anymore.
    - With the standard version, movies are disabled on ALL lots.
    - With the onlyPlayerOwned version, movies are ONLY disabled on residential lots, greek houses (frats) and owned businesses.
If you do purchase this Blu-ray player for your Sims, it's all back as it was... with a catch.
  • Like the real thing, Plumbflix is a subscription service. If you don't pay, no movies for you!
  • After a free trial of 24 hours, which is included with every new Blu-ray player, you will be asked to pay for subscription passes.
  • Your options are:
    - a "Movie Night Pass", good for 8 hours, costing §15. Great for parties.
    - a "Weekly Pass", good for 7 days, costing §150. Great for players that play families rotationally.
  • If the Sim renewing the subscription has a Plumbflix Coupon (from my Scissors Clippers mod) in their inventory, they can get a Movie Night Pass for free!
  • After a subscription is bought, the device keeps track of the remaining time, letting you check on it at any point, and will shut your TV set off if it expires. Plumbflix knows no mercy!
  • The Blu-ray player will only allow movies to be played on a TV it is "connected" to, meaning it must not be placed too far away from the TV set. Any other TV on the lot will not work with the same Blu-ray player.
  • There's custom sounds, too! Praise be to my fiancée, who composed these sounds for me, and an ancient tutorial by hexameter that I found in the catacombs of the Internet. Will you guess the inspiration for the jingle?

Tuning
In the BCON resource 0x1001 "Subscription Prices", you can modify how much each subscription pass costs. The defaults are §15 for the 8-hour pass and §150 for the 7-day pass.

Requirements
Expansion Pack: FreeTime.
This is because the Movies-on-Demand feature was introduced in said EP, which would make this object absolutely useless otherwise.

Overrides
Resource nameType nameTypeGroupInstance
TV - Movie - Make MenuBehaviour Function (BHAV)0x424841560x7F92832C0x00002079

Everything else in this mod is brand-new and will not conflict with anything.

New resources
  • A new object, the Blu-ray Player "Simsong BD-1080P8" is included in this mod.
    - It's found in Electronics > Entertainment and costs §100.
    - It comes in five colours, with black being the default swatch and silver, white, red and gold being the alternate designs.
    - The Blu-ray player is a mesh by simgo from this set. Usage of their mesh is allowed as per their Terms of Use.
    - The black recolour is also made by simgo, but altered by me (e.g. to make the English text into Simlish). The other recolours were made by me.
  • Two custom sounds are introduced in this mod, "plumbflixstartup1" and "plumbflixerror1".

Notes
This mod does not clash with mods that alter Sims' behaviour with movies, such as Neder's Semi-Autonomous Movies or simNopke's No Auto Movies. I would, in fact, recommend that you also get one of these two mods as they complement mine.

Please keep in mind that any custom movies you may have, need to be cloned from other movies. If you have a movie but it's cloned from a TV channel instead, then the option to watch it will still show up.

Conflicts
None that I know of so far.

Please let me know if there are any other conflicts with mods you use, and I will see if something can be done about them by load order or through plug-ins.
