Updates!
  • 2024-05-04: Did the same bugfix for the invisible medicine cabinet, which I accidentally forgot the first time.
  • 2024-05-03: Fixed a "Stack number out of range" bug with the medicine cabinets. Please re-download. Thanks to DoubleABatteries for the report.
  • 2024-04-23:
    (1) After feedback by drinkmorecocoa (thank you!), I have reverted the change on Grouchy Sims taking baths to improve their mood, because it led to them taking baths if they were hungry or sleepy, which really was not my intention. Please re-download.
    (2) Bugfix for the mirrorless Medicine Cabinet. It now no longer contains the old, non-functional advertisements, and instead has the correct new advertisements that the mirrored Medicine Cabinet already had.
    (3) I have uploaded an add-on that will apply all improvements of this mod to Honeywell's Better Bath Collection. The archive includes the default versions, as well as the default versions with the Tinker interaction removed, for compatiblity with the Super Collection on Mac. (This is NOT equal to the base game version of Better Bath, which doesn't have "Wash" and "Be Washed" for pets!)
    (4) Another add-on adds the improvements of this mod to HugeLunatic's backless base game shower-tub. The archive includes one version which equals the "Pets+" version (for compatibility with the Super Collection on Mac), and one version that adds the originally missing "Tinker" interaction, for those that own FT.
    (5) I have also made an add-on that will apply all improvements of this mod to Gummilutt's Invisible Medicine Cabinet, so then you don't have to go back to the default AL medicine cabinets just to have the better Sims behaviour. Just use this and any mirror you want!
  • 2024-04-19: BIG rework which should fix many of the issues people were experiencing, where the mod either showed the wrong effect, or none at all. See this Tumblr post of mine if you want a technical explanation for the first change I am about to list, because by itself it may sound weird. Please re-download! This applies to all flavours.
    (1) I switched most of the values around to put "Min." into "Delta", "Delta" into "Type" and "Type" into "Min.", in order to ensure the advertisement works as it should.
    (2) Bathing now properly advertises to Lazy Sims seeking Comfort, while Neat Sims only receive the Hygiene bonus.
    (3) Bubble Bathing now advertises more to Playful Sims than anyone else.
    (4) Grouchy Sims get a small advertisement for Bathing if they seek a better mood.
    (5) Toothbrushing is changed to only be considered by Sims if they have between 50 and 70 Hygiene, so they will definitely stop considering it if their Hygiene is low enough to warrant having a shower instead. Sims with lower Hygiene can only brush their teeth if there is no shower, bathtub or shower tub in the same room. In turn, I have disabled the influence of "My attribute 22" which is never explained anywhere, and set the attenuation code back to "Moderate".
    (6) Face washing is changed to only be considered by Sims if they have between 20 and 60 Hygiene, so they will definitely stop considering it if their Hygiene is low enough to warrant having a shower instead. Sims with lower Hygiene can only wash their face if there is no shower, bathtub or shower tub in the same room. In turn, I have disabled the influence of "My attribute 23" which is never explained anywhere, and enabled all Sims to wash their faces, instead of just Neat Sims.
  • 2023-11-12: The K&B bathtub should now have the proper functionality. For some reason, it has two different group instances whether you have just K&B, or K&B plus AL or M&G, and my mod previously did not cover the former; but even then, I didn't realise that part of Lord Darcy's SP Objects Fix went into Overrides, which also overrode my mod in return. Oops.
This does mean, however, that I had to split up my change for the K&B bathtub into a separate file which will go into Overrides instead. In return, I removed it from both MoreIntelligentBathrooms and ShowerOrBathRework.
    Please re-download!

In my ongoing series of "Annoyances that grind my gears"... here's another fine creation by your friendly neighbourhood Yoshi!

Have you ever smelled your own body odour and thought "oh man, what I need the most right now is a good long session of brushing my teeth"?
No? According to my Sims, that's THE way to get clean, recommended by 9 out of 10 dentists!

Also, have you ever been in a rush to get to your carpool and thought "oh man, what I need the most right now is a bubble bath"?
No? Because my Sims seem to obsess with this bubbly experience, despite showers and even your regular bath cleaning Sims more efficiently!

I needed to put an end to this behaviour. How does it make sense to brush your teeth against anything that ails your average hygiene needs? And why are bubble baths so addicting even when hygiene is all that should matter in a bathroom?

And thus, I have went into SimPE once again, in order to make short work of these annoyances. And I found some strange coding for the "Take Bubble Bath" interaction along the way. (Originally, I was only going to fix the cabinets...)

With this simple mod in your Downloads folder, two things will change:
1. Sims will only consider using the medicine cabinet to brush their teeth if their Hygiene is still at a reasonable level.
2. You will find that Sims wash their faces more often now, because this was previously locked to only Neat Sims.
3. The autonomy of the interactions "Take Bath" and "Take Bubble Bath" on bathtubs and shower-tubs has been completely revamped to create following new behaviour:
If a Sim seeks both Hygiene AND Comfort, they will usually still take a shower, but may also go for a bath if they are Lazy, or a bubble bath if they are Playful.
If a Sim seeks only Hygiene, they will prefer a shower.
If a Sim seeks only Comfort, they should use other Comfort objects like sofas or beds instead of rushing into the bathroom.

Flavours
I have uploaded four versions of my mod, with one being the "full version" and three being versions that include only part of its features to cater for your personal wants, or for your game configuration; please choose based on your preference and download only one of the files!
  • MoreIntelligentBathrooms.package (MIB) contains all features of my mod.
  • ShowerOrBathRework.package (SoBR) does not contain the medicine cabinet changes, making the mod compatible for people that either don't need them, or don't have Apartment Life.
  • ShowerOrBathRework-mac.package (SoBR-mac) is the same mod as the above, but it's compatible with more game configurations as the Tinker interaction is removed from the pie menu. This mainly caters to people that play the Sims 2 Super Collection on a Mac.
  • NoToothbrushObsession.package (NTO) contains none of the bath overrides and ONLY changes the medicine cabinet behaviours, for those that like the standard game behaviour as it is.
(Technically, NoToothbrushObsession and ShowerOrBathRework do work together, but MoreIntelligentBathrooms does the exact thing as these two mods combined so why carry two separate files?)

In addition, there is a fifth file MoreIntelligentBathrooms-K-B-OVERRIDES (MIB-K&B) that will improve the (Bubble) Bath advertisement values on the K&B Stuff bathtub only; it's separated because it uniquely has to be placed in Overrides instead of Downloads. Keep that in mind!

Add-ons
By default, the changes only apply to the appliances that the game ships with. I have decided to update a few chosen ones I also use in my own game to include the changes, though.

However, I could not imagine bathrooms without Honeywell's Better Bath Collection anymore, so I have decided to apply all of my changes to the two shower-tubs and the bathtub from this set. All original credit goes to Honeywell! The upload was made possible thanks to their generous TOU.
The archive contains the full version, as well as Mac-compatible versions that omit the Tinker interaction from FreeTime. Note that for the Mac version only, I have also included a Tinker-less version of the shower.
Please note that you will still need the rest of the Better Bath Collection, as the bathtub is slaved to the Better Bath Basin!

The second one is an add-on for those that use HugeLunatic's backless version of the base game shower-tub, applying my changes to this standalone version of that shower-tub. All original credit goes to HugeLunatic! I've got their permission to make these changes.
The archive contains the original "Pets+" version for Mac compatibility, as well as one version that adds the originally missing Tinker interaction from FreeTime.
You will not need this if you have HL's backless defaults! This is only for people who have the backless shower-tub as a standalone object in their game.

The third add-on is for Gummilutt's Invisible Medicine Cabinet, giving it the same reasonable ads as the two Maxis medicine cabinets. The upload was made possible thanks to their generous TOU.

Requirements
Which mod flavour?EPs RequiredWhy is that?
MIBFreeTime, Apartment LifeThe Tinker interaction came with FT; Medicine cabinets came with AL
SoBRFreeTimeThe Tinker interaction came with FT
SoBR-macPets (or higher)Wash and Be Washed are Pets interactions. I could remove them, but it'd just not be worth it since TTAB compatibility with EP's before Pets is more complicated.
NTOApartment LifeMedicine cabinets came with AL. Would be useless without this EP
MIB-K&BKitchen & Bath Interior Design StuffThe affected bathtub came with this SP. Would be useless without it.

Notes
  • It should go without saying that this mod only changes the behaviour of the bathtubs, shower-tubs and medicine cabinets that the game ships with. Any CC, except that which I created add-ons for, is not affected!
  • You may notice the minimum requirement for any of the four flavours to work is Pets. This is because, before this EP, advertising interactions to a Sim required different values to be put into the TTAB. Changing all these values to be compatible with OFB, NL, UNI or even just the base game is possible, but I feel like it's too much work for the few that may still be playing with such dated game configurations in these days. The Pets-compatible version is justified because of the Sims 2 Super Collection still being actively sold on the App Store. The changes required to make it compatible with the SC (which is basically a full game up to Bon Voyage) just happened to make it compatible with Sims 2 game configurations that end with Pets or Seasons, too.
  • Here's a few mods that also change how the game handles showers and baths, but are fine to use along with my mod:
    - Squinge's Bubble Bath Fun is fine to use as it only changes the motives that Sims gain while having a bubble bath, NOT the advertising values in the TTAB.
    - Kabuto's Cold/Hot Showers is also fine to use with my mod as it doesn't add the Hot and Cold shower options to the TTAB, instead handling them through a Check Tree.

There may be more that I am not aware of; feel free to let me know and I will add to this list of "safe mods"!

Conflicts
Anything that also modifies the above resources will conflict with my mods.
  • Lord Darcy's SP Objects Fix, as well as HugeLunatic's updated version of it would conflict, but it is nonetheless compatible with my mod as I have incorporated the fixes for the Tinker interaction on the "You Got Feets" Bathtub that came with Kitchen & Bath Interior Stuff into a separate file. This file must load after his to preserve correct functionality of the K&B bathtub.
  • Pick'n'Mix's Shared Showering is compatible if you use his compatibility patch (at the bottom of the page). Note that, as of right now, his patch updates the ad values to the old, broken ones, so I have the updated patch of his uploaded here for now.
  • Chris Hatch's Joinable Baths: If it loads after my mod, then my mod will be rendered useless. If it loads before my mod, then Chris Hatch's mod will be rendered useless. Not recommended to use together.
  • Do not use Rebecah's Non Autonomous Bath - Bubble Bath - Bathe Toddler with my mod... the reason is obvious. Her mod disables these autonomous interactions altogether. Mine attempts to keep the autonomy and just have it make more sense.
  • TwoJeffs' Autonomous Bath Fixes are also not compatible with my mod. Their mod's goal was to pretty much disable bathing unless comfort is low, a suitable shower is in use, or the Sim is pregnant. You could regard it as an alternative approach, but I was not happy with how TwoJeffs did it, personally.
This list of conflicts is likely not complete, though.

Credits
  • Maxis and EA for creating Sims 2 in the first place
  • The Creators of SimPE and especially the TTAB plugin
  • Bubblebeam as a shout-out, because they had the same idea to modify the medicine cabinets before me, as per this forum thread, but it seems like they never released a mod against this behaviour to the public. Hence why I am stepping in to provide a fix for everyone that still enjoys Sims 2 to this day, just like I do.
  • HugeLunatic for aiding me in fixing compatibility with setups without Apartment Life
  • drinkmorecocoa for valuable feedback

Have fun and happy Simming!
